The Renault-Nissan Alliance is on the verge of a $2.2 billion deal with Mitsubishi

It has been five months since Nissan bought a significant portion of Mitsubishi, and we haven’t heard anything more from that. Recently, at Paris Auto Show Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn sketched massive plans for Mitsubishi where he expects legal and government authorities will approve $2.2 billion acquisition of a 34 percent ownership stake in Mitsubishi by year end.

“This is not a deal where we say, ‘OK, we made the deal, now let’s think what we can do together,” he said.

“The day we announce the deal, we’re going to tell you exactly what we’re going to do together. And it’s goint to be massive. And also, it may be very significant between Renault and Mitsubishi as well.”

It’s hard to predict on how Mitsubishi will fit in the Renault Nissan alliance until the the acquisition is approved, Ghosn said that he wants Mitsubishi to become part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, meaning the three would be closely linked in management, vehicle development, R&D and purchasing.

Ghosn said, “Mitsubishi in this case will join the alliance. The alliance is about developing synergy. We know that there are a lot of synergies with Mitsubishi and strategically we have a lot of connection”

Just to remind you, Nissan and Mitsubishi already have vehicle-sharing deals. For example, Mitsubishi supplies Nissan with small cars for Japan. In addition to this report Carlos Ghosn, after becoming the CEO of Nissan, he revived the legendary Nissan GTR line up with R35. So will there be a ‘Return of the Evolution’?
